It’s easy to get comfortable in our faith: to attend Church, read a devotional, pray before meals, and check all the “Christian boxes.” But when Jesus called His followers, He didn’t say, “Come believe in Me.” He said, “Come, follow Me.”
There’s a difference.
Following means movement. It means obedience. It means surrendering our plans, our comfort, and even our idea of what faith should look like. That’s what discipleship really is the daily act of following Jesus, learning from Him, and helping others do the same.
What Discipleship Is and What It’s Not
Discipleship isn’t a program, a Bible study, or a weekly meeting over coffee (though it can include those things). It’s a relationship. One that reflects Jesus’ own example.
Jesus lived with His disciples and traveled with them while teaching. He showed them how to pray, how to love, how to serve, and how to obey the Father. They watched Him closely, learned from His example, and eventually carried His mission forward.
That’s also what true discipleship looks like today. Walking with people through the highs and lows, pointing them to Jesus, and helping them grow in their relationship with Him.
It’s not about being the most “qualified” or “experienced.” It’s about being available.
The Cost of Following
In Luke 9:23, Jesus said,
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” (NIV)
That word “daily” is important. Discipleship isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily choice to die to ourselves and live for Christ. It’s choosing His way when ours feels easier. Every morning is a choice. How are we going to walk out into the world today: looking like the rest of the world or will we take up our cross today?
And sometimes, following Jesus will cost us something. Comfort. Reputation. Convenience. But what we gain is far greater. We gain intimacy with Christ, eternal life, and the joy of helping others experience the same.
It’s not always glamorous. Sometimes it’s messy and slow. But holy work is hard work. The kind that changes lives quietly and deeply.
Walking With Others
One of the most beautiful parts of discipleship is that we don’t walk alone. We’re called to grow in faith together.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17 NIV)
God uses relationships to refine us. When we invest in others by encouraging them, challenging them, and praying with them, we strengthen not only their faith but also our own.
You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to be willing to show up. Be honest about your own journey, share what God is teaching you, and walk alongside someone else who’s seeking Him too.
Discipleship is about leaning into Jesus and letting the Spirit guide your steps.
Living the Mission
At the end of His time on earth, Jesus gave His followers a clear command:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19 NIV)
Every believer has a part to play in this mission. Maybe it’s teaching, maybe it’s mentoring, maybe it’s simply being a consistent friend who points others to Christ through love and example.
Whatever it looks like, discipleship starts with obedience and saying “yes” to where the Lord is calling you to.
Pray for opportunities. Ask God to show you who you can invest in, and who can pour into you. Discipleship is meant to multiply. As you grow, you help others grow. That is Kingdom work.
Encouragement
Discipleship isn’t always easy. It takes patience, humility, and faithfulness. There will be moments when you wonder if it’s making a difference. But remember, even Jesus’ disciples didn’t “get it” right away. Seeds take time to grow.
So keep walking. Keep loving. Keep pointing people to Jesus.
Because when we choose to live as disciples and make disciples, we’re joining in the story God’s been writing since the beginning: a story of redemption, transformation, and everlasting hope.
“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV)
Follow Him wholeheartedly and bring others with you.
